09.09.09

These numbers come up in one form or another every year. For some reason I will just write a few concerns I have and probably they are some of the same ones you have.

I am very concerned about the men and women who are fighting overseas in a war which cannot and will not be won.
I am concerned that there are people who have no medical coverage and their lives are been ruined as a result.

I am concerned about our leaders who are struggling to make real changes but are apposed by vested interests.
I am concerned about the United Nations' inability to grasp the African question and bring some resolve to that ravaged continent.

I am concerned about global warming and our futile efforts to make the changes necessary to bring about positive results.

I am concerned about the millions of children who do not have clean water when we have the means but not the will to correct the situation.

Finally I am concerned that we as people are not good stewards of the land and environment which give us life.

  1. I was alarmed over the ridiculous response to President Obama's addressing American school children this past week. There was so much hysteria – crying and weeping and chest-thumping men and women on the news; picketing parents up in arms that their President was trying to enlist their children. …Into what? Staying in school, getting good grades, volunteering and working hard?? ...And this is supposed to be a BAD thing...???

Despite this display of laughable ignorance, I’m still optimistic, H!

People are like Poodles. It’s like we’re all driving around with our heads hanging out of the car window looking for the next big bright and shiny thing to bark at. The minute someone realizes Timmy is down the well and starts barking to sound the alarm, someone else whose spent the entire car trip licking himself sits up and smacks the first poor bugger over the nose with a rolled up newspaper and they try to convince him that he’s wrong. “Stop barking! I can’t concentrate! OH, LOOK! A SQUIRREL!!!”

    Point being –

We’re losing the war on terrorism. NO, WE'RE NOT!
We’re going to lose everything if we can’t pay our medical bills. YOUR PROBLEM, NOT MINE!
We need to help the people of Africa. GOD HELPS THOSE WHO HELP THEMSELVES!

Sounds a little Bushy, doesn’t it…? Eight long years of conditioning...

I look to the President as a figurehead who is very much like a parent. Either we respect that parental figure or we don't. There will always be the headstrong child who will lash out and rebel (the Limbaughs, the Coulters, the Palins, etc.). These are the Poodles who will try to convince everyone that there is no Timmy; there never was a Timmy; that Timmy’s just a political ploy. OH LOOK! A SQUIRREL!!! There will also always be compassionate levelheaded individuals who respect their President’s leadership and pay appropriate attention to everything he says and does. (This isn't to say they will always agree with him or that he will always be right.)

The reason why I look to the American President (vs. our leadership here in Canada) is because I respect him. I think his vision of where America needs to focus to become healthier economically, structurally, and as a nation as a whole includes a fair dose of compassion and tolerance that the previous Presidency/government was sorely lacking. If someone alerts THIS government that Timmy’s down the well, I think someone is more apt to pay attention this time!

    Sincerely,
    HBB
