Having been subjected to six weeks of negative adds, acrimony and promises we who followed the election process with great interest now suffer from election hangover. Even after a great party people who celebrate too much have that ugly feeling next morning. This election was quite different as the outcome was not predicted by even the experts and the polls were all over the map.
I made my predictions days before the election and came up with reasonable success. My predictions were made on the fact that events and personalities were very important and policy was forgotten by many. People of Ontario showed little trust for a leader promising jobs by cutting 100,000 jobs. We know that properly explained this was not as the opposition parties used to kill the idea. Delivering the message was not a strong point for the Conservative leader. The Liberal leader stayed on course with the points from the defeated budget and captured the interest of the general public. Here was a lady leader who was beat up pretty badly in the debate, looked a little weak but still managed to come out on top.
The unions broke rank with tradition and deserted the NDP and went all out to defeat the Conservatives. With the NDP leader less than powerful by calling the election she never gained traction and in reality deserted the field and never gained the result she desired. She lost more than the election as she revealed a weak leadership style and poor judgment and may have a hard time keeping her job.
The election is over and our new Lady Premier has a majority and an opportunity to shake off the sins of her party from the past and be a force for meaningful change in Ontario. She has a wealth of talent for her cabinet and we can look forward to four years of seeing just how the Liberals will use this new mandate.
