96 and Going Strong

Yesterday we celebrated the 96th birthday of Doris. The family and friends came together as we have on many other occasions to recognize a life of one of our oldest and respected citizens. The grand children, children and friends enjoyed the time shared with Doris and her comments were both humorous and enjoyable.

This year Doris was in good health and she was looking forward to the  visit of one of her few close relatives that being her sister in law and niece from Sussex, New Brunswick .They will be here shortly and stay with us for a week where I am sure stories will be told and news from down home will make the time fly .

At this time in the life of this lady every occasion becomes special and Doris just beams with enthusiasm when she visits with the young members of our family. Her memory is a little short but her eyes light up when she sees the Birthday cake and the realization that she really is ninety six. Her comments about life back at Coot Hill where she was born amaze the young folks as it is difficult for them to realize the changes Doris lived through her long and interesting life.

Doris has travelled extensively over the years but now she enjoys her time at home in the neighbourhood and with her immediate family. Doris loves sweets so this occasion provided a special day of cake and cup cakes to satisfy her sweet tooth. Of course her daughter Theresa is the apple of her eye and she depends on her for literally everything and her other close care givers Glenda and Lynda try to spoil her with special attention. As the day ended with the group dispersing  and travelling back home they all left with a happy feeling because of their time shared with Doris.

Tree Company HHH

Since the wind storm I have been faced with a 35 foot tree which was in danger of falling into my neighbor's yard. When I require help I always phone my son Henry to give me a hand. This time I figured that we could take the tree down in sections and avoid my other trees and the gazebo.

Henry arrived here with his son Henry so we set out to get the job done. With three Henrys there should be little problem. Our plan was to drop the tree in three sections between my small utility barn and the gazebo I had several ornamental shrubs and a inukshuk in line for damage as well but with the rope guiding the fall we were able to get away without any damage at all.

The cleanup after the cutting went well and Henry III did most of the hauling of the branches. Theresa and I are pleased to get this chore finished with help as the city is picking up all the downed branches from the recent storm.

After the work we were joined by a daughter and grandson for dinner. A good visit and a job well done makes for a happy situation. Many thanks for the help H and H!

BEAUTIFUL DAY for a Birthday Party

Theresa loves parties specially if it is a birthday party for her. Well today friends and family gathered to celebrate her unknown birthday number. She has been looking forward to our get together for a few days and was very excited when the people came in for a family dinner complete with cake and gifts. Her Mom was about excited as Theresa was because of the mention of cake Doris get turned on as much as a 95 year old lady can. For the past week she has been trying to figure out how old Theresa is because she cannot believe she can have a daughter as old as Theresa.

Because of the summer holidays and people moving about some of the family were missing but they made their presence known through lengthy phone calls. We had perfect weather and daughter Glenda took over the job as chief cook and used the outdoors on the barbie to provide delicious food for the guests.

At all our parties we have some great discussions and today was no different. Politics ruled the day but the unrest in the USA over the verdict in a recent trial caused a heated debate.By the end of the evening we went our separate way determined to continue our debates at the very next gathering. Theresa had a wonderful day and was thrilled by the response to her special day.

Building a Cottage Bed

My eldest daughter has a cottage which has the need of some rustic touches. She wants to rid the bedroom of some old iron single beds and replace them with some wooden ones. She saw a few pictures on the web and I volunteered to try to build  them with the help of my son.

I purchased the wood and had a very difficult time getting the quality I desired so rustic will be the name of the game. This was a labour of love as a day with my son on any project is a bonus.

The plans were simple enough and the tools required were available so any errors would be man made. I had help the other day from a grandson who is competent with power tools and loves to do projects. He is so busy with baseball, work and other events it is special when he can come by to help.

Part of the work is interrupted by a great lunch of baked chicken and we all love to eat good food. There is only a few little details left before Theresa and I deliver the beds to McKellar Lake and their new home.

Family Values

We are a family that came from parents that had values that made sense in every way for them. Our parents had little opportunity to have an education above the grade eight or nine level. Our Mom and Dad were placed in a situation where their parents needed to have another person with some use to help the family to succeed.

Our parents who were the recipients of this harsh and uncared for love which made them revolt and make sure that every one of their children would have an education . Mom and Dad made sure that all of our nine children had an opportunity Seven of the family did well and pursued an occupation that would  enable them to do better that they would have without the support and help of our family.

Now that I am in my seventies and see the family and extended family I am so proud of the seed planted in our heritage  of our family which is making a huge impact on our community. I might be bragging but maybe not but I do not know of any of our family unemployed or living off the welfare roles. This is a strong testimony of the strong beliefs of our mother and dad who said that there was no work too menial or too dirty for us to do.

I personally did so many menial jobs to get my education and  keep my family healthy and together that I feel like Charlie Brown  - that work is honourable and we should respect it.

Our family values have been passed down and as far as I know that the younger generation has grasped the concept and continue to feel empowered by having a job.

Charlie Brown - My Dad

Imagine having a Father whose name was Charlie Brown who had a Dalmatian dog named Snoopy. That was my Dad. Dad came by the dog when it wandered into his yard one day and stayed despite the best efforts to find its owner. Dad built Snoopy a dog house and yes, Snoopy slept on the roof.

My Father could not be described in a simple blog as he was a very complicated person. He and his family lived in a place called Cranberry in the shadow of the largest submarine coal mine and when he was in grade eight was pulled from school and became a boy miner. He worked beside his father as a helper and received  practically nothing for his labour.

This early start for physical labor probably was the reason he grew to be the strongest man I knew for his size.He was a bright student his teacher told me as she taught many members of our family and my very favorite teacher of all time.Working in the mine never curbed Dad's thirst for learning and if he had the opportunity he would have made an excellent engineer as he had a natural ability to fix everything. He was never stopped from taking on projects and one year he built a hay baler from plans in the Family Herald.

He loved sports and played football and was an excellent skater and made his own skate blades from files. He skated with the seniors well after eighty and taught many to enjoy the activity.

As a father he helped the boys to love fishing and took us to secret places when we were young so we could enjoy the sport. He tied his own fish flies and shared them with friends. Dad also built the boats we fished from and built some for friends. He showed his love for the family in small ways. Always a good provider and hard worker he showed devotion by example. There was never a time when I heard the phrase that he was too tired to do anything. People sought his help and he was there for them.

Being the Father of nine children gave him a sense of pride by making sure we had that which escaped him, an education. When grand children came along and there were many Mom and Dad softened up and became different people. They were able to share emotions that they missed as younger parents. Dad had time to pass on many of the skills and tricks that made him a happy person and was granted the love and affection from his family.

There are few days that go bye when I do not think of Dad when I approach a task and would love to be able to phone him and ask for help as I did when I built my double garage with his guidance. Charlie Brown would smile now for sure if he was able to see the huge family he led and left as his legacy.

Wednesday Fam-Jam

Normally we have family get togethers on the weekends but now that our family have many activities during that time we planned to try Wednesday. Except for Troy we all made it.It was fun to hear the gossip and news from the group. There was even some heated debates but in reality it was just a family gathering.

Our aging grand children have times set aside for the cottage, baseball is a reality and Troy was missed and actually weekends are not at all convenient any more except for special occasions. We are fortunate to have so many of our family in the immediate vicinity we are able to have a core group at any time.

Doris is back home with us and feels the love of her family on such events and we in turn enjoy seeing her happy and in better health. For a senior to suffer a fall it can be traumatic but Doris is recovering and becoming mobile again.

We all had a good time and plan more of the same in the future.

Dar's Birthday

Darlene's birthday; what a wonderful day! With every one of the immediate family present we celebrated another 50th birthday with a famjam. Great food, plenty of stories and a drink or two made the hours an adventure. Everyone had a story about the guest of honor  and with laughs and bursts of energy we were treated to what we do best, enjoy our time together as a family.

Darlene is our second oldest and has had a great life enjoying her family and a running career. She has made us very proud with her great ability to energize any group with her athletic ability. During the evening the grandchildren were treated to another special guest, Darcy from B.C. Darcy is in the middle of an extended holiday where she is bonding with family members and friends. Picture taking was experienced as this has been a special occasion as every member of our family was present.

Late into the evening the young people continued to share stories and were reluctant to see the special day end.Theresa and I enjoy every family gathering but this one was exceptional in so many ways. As Dar left this morning to travel to her home we were very satisfied to have had the opportunity to celebrate her special day and wish her the very best in the future

Pensive Mood

There are times in our lives when we have to come to grip with issues that are life changing. At this time we are at that stage - or at least I am that. Life gives us an opportunity to expand our horizons but at a cost. Should we make choices that are for our benefit or should we consider the bigger picture and see life as a community venture and contemplate the whole family?

We have been fortunate to have lived in Florida for ten years in a beautiful home and with close friends and activities which would be the envy of many. Our 95 year old mother is in a lodge which also would be the envy of many but she is missing the most important part of her life. She misses we who are living the good life, and feels alone despite the fact that she has family close by.

We will have to return to Oakville and have Doris come back into the fold and share her remaining years with the people that really count. This is not a easy decision as we will have to sell our home here and return to the winter weather which we have escaped for so many years.

This stage in our life will have its rewards as we will be able to share the remaining years that Doris will have here on earth. I have a clear picture of the years ahead and realize that there is always a social benefit from doing the proper thing. We are anxiously looking forward to our new adventure.

Turning 76

I used to think that people who were over 75 were very old. Being one of these old people now I have a change of heart. I know for sure I am slower but still get where I am going, quieter as I listen more - especially to the young folks who have much to say - and less judgmental as you accept many answers as all being acceptable.

On this birthday I was surrounded by all my family except number two daughter Darlene who was in Ottawa. It felt comfortable to be among the family where there were no issues that divide us but many common values that become the framework of our family. As we branch out and become inclusive and bring more people into the fold, we become stronger with our acceptance of new and exciting cultural ideas.

I feel that my life passed so quickly, and the remainder years will be filled with exciting new adventures, but there will be more looking back and cherishing the happiness received from belonging to a loving family and friends. I will have a strong desire to make sure that our young people know and understand where they have come from and the rich heritage they are so fortunate to share. I am still seeking information about my past and it helps me to understand why I am what I am. I don't mean to quote Moses but that statement by God in answer to Moses at the burning bush is profound by itself. "I am who I am."

I have a few wishes for the next period of time. The doctors  gave me a new back and I must lose weight to help in the healing process. I should begin a service to others by volunteering for a good cause. I must keep in touch with those who have made my life rich and exciting and share my joy of life with them. Finally I must advocate for Mother Earth and Mother Nature and make the world a better place in which to live. All these objectives will only be achieved with the help of my wife Theresa May.

Family Christmas Gathering

This year we were able to look around the room and see every member of our family. We got together at Lynda and Peter's place and from the first minute to the time we departed we heard  nothing but laughter and joyful conversation.

The turkey dinner and all the celebration results in much effort on the part of the host but they have been doing this for a while so it now has become a tradition. We communicate on a regular basis but being in the same room is really special. Our 8 grandchildren are growing up and can no longer be thought of as children. They have noisy and earnest debates about everything and I love to see that each has a mind of their own and have no difficulty expressing it.

Christmas is such a wonderful season and day that we look forward to this gathering for months ahead. This year it was so great to have all together that picture taking was a major event. It is always a good idea to document these celebrations as you never know when we will all be together again.

As the celebration ends we all go off our separate ways talking of the wonderful Christmas of 2012 and planning next year's get together.

Uncle Russell

I received a call last evening from my sister Carol Ann and I knew the message before I returned the call. Uncle Russell passed away. This summer I missed the opportunity of a visit but he was resting when I arrived at his house and I did not wish to disturb him. It was perhaps better in the long run as I remember Uncle Russell as a younger, active and influential person in my life.

I was fortunate in having half a dozen uncles and four of them lived within a stones throw from my home. I had the benefit of four men who shared every minute of spare time actively engaging their extended family in healthy activities. Ma Vickers' boys used the spacious yard as a compound with their homes built around the family house.

The yard became a sports arena where horse shoe pits were built and used nearly every day. Ball gloves were in the outer porch and there was always an uncle to play catch and in winter a family size rink was built right in the middle of the yard.

All of my uncles nurtured us and made sure we played by the rules. Uncle Russell was probably the quietest of all my uncles but had a positive impact on our lives. He would listen to us and had this habit of looking at us and saying really when we spoke questionable statements. He would then not criticize us but give his patented grin and chuckle. He had a impish manner and expressive eyes that indicated to us his acceptance or rejection of our conduct.

Just after WWII when two of our uncles returned home there was a celebration at the family home. Uncle Matt and Buster arrived home and we as children were caught up in all the excitement. My cousin Adrian was in the kitchen and picked up a pack of Camel cigarettes. He motioned to Harry and I to follow him outside. We retreated to the old apple tree and each took a cigarette. These were not cork tipped but strong tasting tobacco. We had trouble lighting them but managed to send up a cloud of smoke. Our fun ended when this figure looked down on us with a big grin. He encouraged us to finish the smoke. I never smokes another cigarette in my life. I was sick, Russell never ratted on us but we paid the price.

The best experiences with uncle Russell came during the hot days of summer when he took all of us swimming at the back shore. It was a two mile walk down past the big pond and we always stopped by a small creek which oozed coppers water. He explained it was from the abandoned coal mine. That was the first time I was introduced to the word pollution.. At the back shore was a huge sandy beach in the shadow of the tailing's of the closed steel mill. We never ever saw anyone there except us. Russel had us running races and getting in the freezing water and just having fun laughing and making noise in a place that was otherwise silent except from the crashing waves from the ocean. He always said to point east and over there was England. We loved these times.

I got in a little trouble once when I disobeyed my Grandmother. There was a small crop pit beside the house and we were told to stay away. One evening after dark I saw uncle Russell removed the frame over the pit and placed a winch in it's place. He disappeared down a latter with his carbide lamp lit.. I saw this and tried to follow but the latter was tricky. Russel heard me and chased me up the latter. He was angry and told me never to do this again.  I knew I was in trouble but he never told Grandma  or Mom. That was the kind of uncle he was.

Uncle Russel was 90 years old and lived a quiet life with his wife and daughter. He will be in the memory of his nephews for years to come. He made a difference in our lives.

Thanksgiving Weekend

Thanksgiving weekend is very special for our family. It is not only a time to realize just how fortunate we really are but it is our family get together. For us it is the turning point and turn around time as we trek to our southern home right after the shared time with family.

Fall is in the air and leaves are falling, my garden is out, and ground prepared for next spring and I am looking forward to our Florida garden. There is always a hint of sadness at the end of the Thanksgiving celebrations as we will not see our friends and family until Christmas. This year Doris will not be sharing time with us in Florida and we will miss her. Good telephone plans help to keep in close contact.

During the last week I have renewed contact with several friends from the past and that brought some joy to our life. It is almost like getting a surprise gift when the phone rings or you get an email from friends with whom you have not been in contact for some time.

This year all of our family with the exception of one  will share hours of time and Lynda's home will a hub of activity. Lively discussions, stories and some achievements told and sometimes embellished by the younger ones makes for real good family time.

When I was in the High Arctic I had a Thanksgiving turkey and invited my young friends to a special dinner. I tried to make it as much like our traditional dinner to stay off the lonely feeling I had from being separated from my family at this time. The Inuit children were great and followed all the rules I made to give them a special experience. It was special and after dinner and cleanup we spoke of the meaning of thanksgiving. I was amazed at the conversation from the little ones and what they were thankful for. Every one was thankful for an unselfish memory and before leaving to face the below zero weather I received thanks and a hug from each. I shall always remember that first Thanksgiving dinner away from home and family and how the Inuit Children made me think about all the wonderful life  experiences I received throughout my life. Now I miss those kids and their wonderful ability to be thankful for very little.

Family Get Together

Every year when Theresa and I visit Cape Breton our family plan an event so we will see as many of the family and friends as possible. this year was no exception as all my siblings and many of my nephews and nieces came out to Melvyn's and Darla's home. With a great pool for the young ones to swim and surrounded by country food our shared time was warm and memorable.

I have four brothers and sisters living back home and it is special to be able to see them together and relating so well. The changes in the little ones over two years is amazing. Little girls become young ladies and boys grow to be young men. The family traits are deeply ingrained and the comparisons are made. Pictures are taken and and one of we five always draw special notice as we are getting older. I don't see too great a difference each year because I don't wish to think of us aging.

Family pulls you together and helps you to remember your heritage and share the past with young ones.I feel it is sad when children lose out on gatherings where there is an opportunity to mingle with members of the family from away . These family events help to keep the clan strong and I love every time we are able to have a fam..jam.
